ABCD 1-Seat Chair
Incredible ABCD 1-Seat Chair, a sculptural one-seater designed by Pierre Paulin for Artifort in 1968. This chair is comprised of three distinct segments distinguished by their wave-shaped curves. The gently sloping curved seats offer each user their own cozy space. Upholstered in the exquisite Pierre Frey mohair fabric, it is truly stunning.
The sterling reputation that Artifort enjoys isn’t limited to the innovative upholstery and fluid, organic shapes for which its products are widely known. Artifort’s vintage seating and other furniture are celebrated for their embodiment of functionality, comfort, and quality. These principles underpin the philosophy toward modern furniture design at Artifort, which has been at the crossroads of furniture and art for over 125 years.
Prior to 1928, Jules Wagemans had a small upholstery business in Maastricht, the Netherlands. His son, Henricus Wagemans, broadened the scope to include furniture production. By the end of the 1920s, their showroom in Amsterdam made them a recognizable brand across the Netherlands. Renamed Artifort during the economic recession, the name derives from Latin words meaning “art” and “strong”—a perfect description for the style and sturdiness of each design.

About Design
Born in Paris in 1927, French designer Pierre Paulin studied stone carving and clay modeling at the École Camondo in Paris in the early 1950s. Best known for his long-term collaboration with Artifort, starting in 1958, Paulin created iconic pieces like the Mushroom Chair (1959), Ribbon Chair (1966), and Tongue Chair (1968). He was also commissioned to decorate private apartments of French presidents Pompidou and Mitterrand. Influenced by early modernists and Charles and Ray Eames, his work is in major museums worldwide. Paulin passed away in Montpellier, France in 2009.
