About Designer
Tobia Scarpa, born in Venice, Italy in 1935, has long been a distinguished figure in the design world alongside his first wife, Afra Bianchin Scarpa (1937-2011). As a design duo, they created numerous popular products for iconic brands such as Cassina, Molteni&C, B&B Italia, Maxalto, Gavina, and Knoll. Tobia also served as a long-standing architect for the Benetton Group, designing several of their factories and stores. In 1969, Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed the Soriana chair, which won the prestigious Italian Compasso d'Oro award the following year. The Scarpa couple's design philosophy centers on the essence of sitting—aiming to achieve a state of complete and thorough relaxation through their furniture designs.
About Design
Supported by a large metal framework, this sofa introduces a revolutionary approach to furniture design, eschewing internal supports for a bold, free-form aesthetic. Its cushions, adorned with central buttons, enhance the piece's visual appeal, while the external soft lines are "squeezed" into shape by chrome-plated metal clamps, adding a tactile dimension to its appearance. This technique not only contributes to its distinctive contoured look but also marks the Soriana as the first of its kind to rely solely on external structuring. The sofa's base is encircled by a steel ring, which anchors the voluptuous form, giving it a charmingly plump silhouette reminiscent of a child's round face with braces. Affectionately known as the "Braces Sofa," the Soriana combines whimsical design with structural innovation, making it a beloved and iconic piece in contemporary interiors.
